Education, is a basic human right, and has the power to transform communities, individuals and countries. Illiteracy is one of the main causes of sustained poverty and millions of children in developing countries cannot go to school because of poverty. The best gift a parent can offer a child is education.
Some interesting facts by UNESCO suggests:
1. One additional year of school can boost lifetime earnings by 10 per cent
2. Maternal deaths would shrink by two thirds if all mothers completed primary education
3. One year more of education for a population can increase GDP from 2 to 5%
4. Each extra year of school decreases young boys’ risk of involvement in conflict by 20%
We have made it our priority to ensure that children have easy access to quality education by supporting programmes involved in implementing schools and creating educational opportunities.
Being Humanitarian runs different projects under the education program; we renovate and uplift vulnerable schools, distribute school supplies, provide teacher training, develop educational resources, and more.
There are more than one hundred thousand schools in Pakistan and Bangladesh which do not have basic facilities to create a conducive learning environment for students. Most commons problems are overcrowding, access to toilets/water facilities, no furniture and students not having books and stationary supplies.
What we do is identify vulnerable school (s), renovate, upgrade existing toilets/ build extra toilets and water facilities, provide new furniture and other necessities required in the school. We also provide school kits, clean drinking water facilities, hygiene-promoting lessons, and teacher training workshops.
This results in improved, higher-quality education, increased enrolment in schools (especially for girls), and awareness about hygiene and better standards for educational environments.
Being Humanitarian collaborated with Deaf Reach to raise funding for seven schools that cater to the deaf community in Pakistan.
Deaf reach schools and training centres provide comprehensive academic instruction, literacy development and vocational skills training to deaf children and adults in an enabling environment where students can excel. Admission is provided on a “pay what you can afford” basis, with 98 percent of students on scholarships covering their academic and vocational training costs. Daily transport up to a radius of 40 kilometres is also provided for all students at each campus.
Technology is used to reinforce visual learning, allowing students to master IT skills from an early age. Emphasis is given to the use of Pakistan Sign Language (PSL) in the classroom to facilitate learning. Students ultimately become literate in three languages: Sign Language, Urdu and English. Deaf Reach also offers regular training programs for parents and teachers to improve their communication with deaf children and students.
Deaf Reach prepares its students for matriculation exams and subsequently supports with job placement opportunities upon graduation. Till date, 96 percent of examinees achieved high passing marks in all core subjects, which include IT and Arts. In addition to academics, Deaf Reach offers basic vocational skills training to all students, ages 12 and older.
Advanced vocational training courses are available for deaf young adults to equip them with marketable skills and prepare them for gainful employment. All Deaf Reach campuses are equipped with vocational training labs offering courses in IT skills, cooking and nutrition, arts, handicrafts, weaving, sewing, embroidery, screen printing, and tailoring.
